More than a trip...

So…in 24 hours I’ll be back in my own bed, home and for sure reflecting on the past 2 weeks that I’ve been away.

I will miss being away, just relaxing and being refreshed, but I think I’m ready to come home. It’s been more of a vacation for me here and while being in Canada. This is the most time I’ve spent with family in a long time and the irony is that I’m not even “home”. But like they say, home is where the heart is. I’ve always loved traveling..I like the feeling of walking through an airport terminal with a backpack, passport and boarding pass in one hand and my other hand strolling my check-in luggage (even if most airlines charge you!) I like seeing people come and go from their points of origin. This is also my love for cultures and different ways of life..and of course my love for world sports/competition (London 2012!!!) But I’ll save that topic for a next entry blog ;) Yes, living out of a suitcase isn’t the ideal situation but who cares..GO OUT AND SEE THE WORLD!

Now that my time away from home is coming to a close, I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve never asked my self so many questions about my own life & relationship with God. Asking myself the TOUGH questions. You learn a lot when you do and it’s not about talking to yourself but seeing yourself from another perspective. Going deep with questions and really seeing yourself for who you are. Have I answered all of them? Of course I haven’t and I don’t think they’ll be answered when I step off of the plane tomorrow night. But I think that’s where the beauty of this whole “soul-searching” is..you’re always gonna be learning. What fun is there having all of the questions answered and you’re left with nothing? Some suggest the opposite and say that having things unanswered is being left with nothing..sure that can be true, but if you see it that way, you’ve stopped asking and stopped wanting to live. This life we live isn’t about finding all of the answers in hopes to be the smartest person and having all of the right techniques so we can be perfect, but this life is about taking chances..taking risks and living life to the fullest. That can only come by searching the inner-most parts of your heart and asking, am I up to this? And realizing that life is too short, you’re gonna want to go places, be someone, experience life; again..TO THE FULLEST! It’s more than just “YOLO!”

We’ve all made mistakes in our lives..that’s the reality, we’re human. Coming from a Christian stand point, God gave us free will so that we can CHOOSE TO LOVE!What fun would God have if He created us to not have free will and for us to love him automatically. There’s no joy in that! Imagine you have a kid (in the future) and He loved you against his own will..yes it’s satisfying to us, but for a moment. For a kid to LOVE his mom and dad just because he does, he wants to and he chooses to, that’s more gratifying then being forced love and seeing no effort. There’s a lot to learn from that kids stand point that shows the true nature of God = unconditional love.

God desires us to be in a relationship with Him..but we must first decide if we want to. He’s always there and forever will be waiting for us to accept His unconditional love. Do you accept? That’s where I am..do I love Him and want to be in a relationship with Jesus Christ? I’ve always “said” yes when I asked myself that question..it’s was almost as if I was stupid to have asked that. But when you’re given a time and place where all you do is think about it, you’ll start to really ask yourself, “Do I love Jesus?” It’s easy to answer yes because logically, it’s the right thing to do..but do you whole-heartedly believe that or are you just saying it because it’s “the right thing to do/say”. It’s easy for us to say we love our parents, we love our siblings, our pets, our kids, our material things. But do you agape (unconditionally love) them? better yet..do you agape God? That means, you love God no matter the circumstance, trials, hardships, joy, pain, laughter, sadness, and tragedies that WILL come. Trust and faith that He is in control of the entire universe yet, knows every head on our heads..enough to place our lives in His hands.

I’m coming home with many questions unanswered, but with a much better perspective on life and my relationship with God. We are chosen as His..He loves us. That’s all that matters..and that’s all that I’m clinging on to.

This has been more than refreshing. Walking in a rain forest & atop a mountain..God is constantly reminding us EVERYDAY how MAJESTIC He is. It’s very ignorant of us to take for granted this beautiful place that we live in. The high mountains, the low valleys, the green pastures is just a glimpse of the wonderful works his His hands have created. I remember reading Job a few weeks ago and though it is full of Job’s conversations towards God, Elihu, towards the end in chapter 37 “proclaims God’s majesty.”

This encouraged Job to see that God is still God despite having all of us treasures taken away along with his family and friends. Sometimes we think that when we lose our “prized possessions” our world is coming to an end. But how misled our thoughts are. We forget that God is the creator of all the universe..and only focus on our 70-90 years of existence. How ignorant we can be!

I know it’s easier said than done..but we can’t forget how great our God is. We are flesh, we are human..but when we receive His love and know that we are saved by grace through faith, HE LIVES IN US! Just as the same power that conquered the grave lives in us, I believe that the power that created the heavens and the earth also lives in us. Of course we can’t create anything of that magnitude, but it should remind us and encourage us that even though we lose people, material things, & etc..God is more than enough! God’s love is all that we need and all that we should want. Nothing else matters..Him being at the center of our lives should propel us to return that love back to Him.

“Authentic Worship”

kNOw retreat, kNOw surrender...

Decided to steal that title from KGKL. :)

But this vacation has turned into a personal retreat, to get away from the comforts of home; although home has felt uneasy and uncomfortable in the past few days and weeks. I have never felt so humbled and ‘naked’ in my life. With nothing to hold onto and nothing to brace my fall with..I am forced to retreat, I am forced to surrender. Far too long have I placed my identity in my works and my relationships. Far too long have I pushed away God and placed exterior things to take His place. Idol Worship. It’s easy to say, “that will NEVER be me!” but in reality..it’s EASIER to say: “How was I so stupid?!”

The key to surrender and repentance: it’s not about us! It’s all about the grace and sovereignty of God! Turning away from our sinful nature and running towards God. I love how Hillsong wrote Forever Reign:

“Oh I’m running to Your arms

I’m running to Your arms

The riches of Your love will always be enough”

When we turn to Him, that unfailing, amazing love is all that we need and should want. But our flesh will look towards temporal satisfaction to fill that void that we think God can’t fill, especially when we are insecure about it.

This season will be long and hard..and I know that there will be times that I want to quit, throw in the towel and think it’s not worth it. This feeling hurts..but like it’s sung: the riches of Your love will always be enough! The head knowledge is not enough, it’s not gonna suffice and not gonna be able to keep me grounded in God.

HEART

That’s what it’ll take to be enough, for it to suffice, and to help keep me grounded in God. So for the next two weeks, closing out this month of June..I WILL retreat, I WILL surrender..because God is all I have and all I really need. Everything else is an addition, it’s a blessing from God in response to our authentic, real, no strings attached, unconditional love.

Summit Bound...

To the top I go.

Imagine having to climb a mountain where many have failed and few have conquered. Mt. Everest is 29,029 feet above sea level. Now if you ask me, thats PRETTY HIGH! If you asked me to climb it, without question…I’d say NO! If I were dropped off via helicopter at 29,028 feet, maybe I’d consider taking that extra step to accomplish such an insurmountable feat.

Now imagine you were at sea level..and all you could do and was forced to do was walk, hike, trek..climball 29,029 feet of mother earth to the summit of Everest, would you do it?

Would the blood, sweat, and tears be worth the view? Knowing that you would be in a select fraternity of individuals that have made the ascent to the highest point of the world..would you even CONSIDER booking a ticket to China and gearing up to climb the highest peak of the Himalaya Mountains.

That’s where I am…

I’m at the bottom…

No where near the top…

I haven’t even booked my ticket to China…

I can’t even muster up the courage to climb up Waimea Rock to jump back into the ocean for fun…

But I have to…

I need to…

My. Life. Depends. On. It.

If I could make anymore sense, my life depends on me. The great Julius Caesar put it best when he said, “Veni, Vidi, Vici!” Which if you listened back in history class translates to: “I came, I saw, I conquered!” Only a “God-fearing, few” can say that statement and in our faith, reference it back to Romans 8:37 - ‘No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.’

I think Ross Parsley and New Life Church lyrically sang it to perfection:

We will overcome

By the blood of the lamb

And the word of our testimony

EVERYONE OVERCOME!!! (Romans 12:11)

The beauty of this ascent to the top..is I’m not alone. Far too long I’ve tried to muster up my own courage, my own boldness, my own strength to live this life. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, BUT WITH MANY ADVISERS THEY..SUCCEED!” I remember coming upon this scripture and, as I look back, only NOW have I realized how true that is. Relationships are key to living this life of faith. You hear it EVERY..SINGLE..WEEK: Grace Groups!!! There are so many people in this world that need to understand that mountain climbing faith requires surrounding yourself with people that will encourage you, pick you back up when you’re down and..plain and simple: LOVE YOU! You can’t beat those odds when God is in the midst of everything. I’m ready for this so-called, insurmountable feat..NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!

All I need to do..is start climbing!
